STEAM

Our school offers a rigorous college preparatory curriculum that focuses on science, technology, engineering, the arts, and math.  What exactly does that look like in a classroom?

A great example is:

The social studies department conducted an extensive “voter education” campaign leading up to the 2012 presidential election.  All of the girls discussed the issues of the day – particularly health issues, immigration issues, economic issues and defense issues.  They “voted” based on issues as well as the individual candidates.

How did STEAM fit this activity?  The math classes graphed results and did statistical analysis of the results. The science department, through the use of the Lego Robotics team, built “voting” machines so that on election day each girl was able to cast her vote electronically.

At CGLA teachers are encouraged to integrate STEAM into every lesson.  It promotes critical thinking, and our girls are learning to think in this integrated way as they complete their assignments.
