STEAM Night - Quarter 1
Students at the Chattanooga Girls Leadership Academy (CGLA) are set to host the first STEAM Showcase Night of the academic year to take place October 4, 2016 at 5:30 pm. This event will showcase the progress and/or results of various STEAM-related (science, technology, engineering, art, and math) projects in which students and classes have conducted along side local businesses and organizations. This collaboration provides the opportunity for students to apply traditional core competencies along with STEM design principles for the purpose of solving a real-world problem directly affecting one of the respective organization partners. Andrew Meador, CGLA Faculty STEM Director urges the community to “join us in celebrating the achievements of CGLA students and witness the incredible work our girls have been pouring into their project-based learning groups.”In addition to viewing and learning about CGLA student research, participants will be able to engage in various STEM-related activities. TechTown will be on site to provide opportunities for guests to test their hand at robotics and film while CGLA faculty and students will provide interactive lessons on aquaponics, traditional gardening, and rocketry. In addition, Greenspaces will be present to discuss ways families can decrease energy consumption and, in turn, lower utility bills. With this event, students look to engage families and community members in their STEM projects with the hope of generating further excitement among visitors, especially the young adults. Events such as this can serve as a catalyst for career exploration by educating others about the fun, exciting, and potentially lucrative career one may find working within a STEAM-related field.CGLA would like to thank their various project and event partners such as TechTown for helping to make this event fun for all. A special ‘Thank You’ is extended to Carrabba’s Italian Grill for providing heavy hors d’oeuvres for event participants.
